Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1What can I expect during the initial intake evaluation?
The initial intake evaluation is a comprehensive session where we discuss your current concerns, history, and goals for therapy. This session helps in creating a tailored treatment plan that addresses your unique needs.
2How long does each therapy session last?
Typically, each follow-up therapy session lasts about 45-50 minutes. However, the duration may vary based on the specific therapy plan we design for you.
3Do you accept insurance?
Yes, I accept insurance from Blue Cross Blue Shield plans. Using insurance requires a DSM-5 medical diagnosis based on the initial assessment and presenting issue. Please note that all insurance-based notes are subject to an insurance audit by your insurance company.
4What if I am not in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield?
If you are not in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, you can request a superbill for reimbursement if you have out-of-network benefits. A superbill is an itemized form detailing services provided, which you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.
5What is a DSM-5 medical diagnosis?
The DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition) is a tool used by mental health professionals to diagnose mental conditions. Based on our initial assessment and your presenting issues, if you're using insurance, I will provide a diagnosis from the DSM-5, which is a requirement for insurance coverage.
6Can I choose not to use insurance?
Absolutely. If you prefer not to use insurance, you can pay out of pocket for your sessions. This option allows for greater privacy, as no diagnosis or session notes are required to be shared with insurance companies.
7What if I am a parent going through a divorce and I want my child to attend therapy?
Submit an inquiry online. If you have joint legal custody, both parents must sign consents and agree to therapy. In your online inquiry, you will need to include the other parents name, email, and phone number for us to gather information to obtain consent. If you have sole physical and legal custody, you can submit an inquiry online, you will need to email the court order to us before the time of scheduling.
8How often should I attend therapy sessions?
The frequency of therapy sessions depends on your individual needs and goals. This can be discussed during your initial evaluation, and we can adjust as needed throughout the course of therapy.
9What is your cancellation policy?
I require a 24-hour notice for cancellations or rescheduling of appointments. Missed appointments without proper notice may be subject to a cancellation fee of the full cost of the service.
10Why don't you accept insurance for couples therapy?
Our methods of treatment focus on relationship growth and the needs of the couple: Insurance companies require a DSM-5 diagnosis for reimbursement, which typically focuses on the individual rather than the relationship dynamics. Individual diagnoses are not assigned in couples therapy and there is no “identified patient”. Our approach in couples and family therapy is to foster growth, understanding, and healing within the relationship or family system, which may not always align with the criteria for a medical diagnosis.
11How Do I Know If Therapy or Coaching Is Right for Me?

Deciding between therapy and coaching depends on your current situation, goals, and what you're hoping to achieve. Here's a brief overview to help you determine which might be the best fit for you:

Therapy focuses on mental health and emotional challenges. It's designed to address psychiatric disorders, past trauma, emotional difficulties, and psychological aspects of life's challenges. Therapy is the right choice if you:

  • Are dealing with mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, or PTSD.
  • Want to heal from past traumas or address long-standing psychological patterns.
  • Need a space to process emotions and understand your thoughts and behaviors deeply.

Coaching is more goal-oriented and future-focused. It's ideal for individuals who are looking to improve their life, career, or relationships through setting goals and creating strategies for success. Coaching might be for you if you:

  • Are seeking to achieve specific goals or improve certain areas of your life.
  • Want to enhance personal or professional skills, such as communication, time management, or leadership.
  • Are looking for guidance in making decisions or navigating life transitions.
